MONKEY-DO

This project was born out of the fact that space is often at a premium, especially in the inner-city. Therefore, we need to be efficient with how we use our limited square footage to accommodate our diverse interests and activities. This is especially relevant with the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, where our houses must now function as self-contained Arks, at least for the near-future, and need to absorb many of the activities that could once be taken outside the home to more communal locations and facilities.

MONKEY-DO is a flexible piece of wall-mounted furniture that acts as a workout area, a play space, and a display and storage unit. Inspired by gymnastics ladders, this apparatus contains a number of deployable elements that expand out into the living space when it is being used as a physical activity centre; these elements then neatly collapse against the wall when not in use, freeing up the adjacent area for other tasks. Beautiful craftsmanship and considered details elevate the piece above the typical gym aesthetic. Easily adjustable and moveable shelves that hang from the horizontal bars create opportunities for display and storage between workouts and playdates, when you just want your living room to look like a living room.
